When Digoxin went “off market” and was eligible to be copied, there was no reason to suspect the generic version of the popular drug that helps the heart contract and beat more efficiently. Yet the new brand, Digitek, faced a nationwide recall in April 2008 because of the possibility that pills with double the approved thickness may have been marketed to the public.
In other words, some lots of Digitek may have contained twice the appropriate level of the active ingredient digitalis. Patients with congestive heart failure or atrial fibrillation, especially those switching from Digoxin or some other form of digitalis, should be on the alert for potentially harmful effects of a double dosage of Digitek. Symptoms of digitalis toxicity can include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Dizziness
- Low blood pressure
- Slowed heart rate
- Cardiac instability
- Heart failure
- Stroke
- Even death
Actavis Totawa LLC, manufacturers of Digitek, have announced a voluntary nationwide recall of its product, which is distributed by Mylan Pharmaceuticals under the Bertek label and by UDL Laboratories under the UDL label. The oral medication comes in pill form in both 12.5 mg and 25 mg dosages.
But for many cardiac patients, the recall may be too late.
The law firm of Searcy Denney Scarola Barnhart & Shipley advises anyone with a heart condition who has suffered harm, or family of a cardiac patient who has died, to find out if the patient has a history of taking Digitek. Many patients received direct notification of receipt of defective lots from their pharmacies. We are available to investigate injuries and deaths following ingestion of this drug, and to help victims and their families seek justice.
If you or a loved one has suffered the symptoms of digitalis toxicity from taking Digitek, please fill out our contact form, or call us to learn more and arrange for a confidential free consultation.
